About Lakhimpur Kheri (Kheri) District (Uttar Pradesh)
Lakhimpur Kheri district, a part of Lucknow division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Lakhimpur Kheri town. Earlier the term Lakhimpur was popularly known as Luxmipur. The district got its name from a tomb built over the remains of Saiyid Khurd, who died in 1563. According to the second theory, the name of the district is taken from the khair trees that once covered a huge part of this place. Its history is associated with the era of Mahabharata. Many villages present in the district has some ancient mounds in which several fragments of sculpture was found, out of which Balmiar-Barkhar and Khairlgarh are the most marvelous one. A precious stone horse with the inscription of Samudra Gupta, dated in the 4th century was also found near Khairabad, a place in the district. And this antique stone horse, is now present in the Lucknow Museum. During the medieval period in the 10th century the place was under the Rajput rulers. Then in the 14th century numerous forts were built including the northern frontier in order to protect the invasion of Nepal. During the 17th century, the region became a part of Mughal Empire. Slowly and gradually the Muslim rule spread in the entire region. Then British came to India and in the year 1801, a part of Lakhimpur Kheri was included in the session. Finally, in the year 2001, it was emerged as a separate district in the map of Uttar Pradesh.
Geographically, the district lies between 27°95'N latitude, 80°78'E longitude and 147 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 16.57% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 7,680 sq. km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 1st in the state and 110th in India. It is bounded by Mohan River on the north, Kauriala River on the east, Sitapur district and Hardoi district on the south and Pilibhit district and Shahjahanpur district on the west. The prominent rivers that flows through the district are Sarda and Ghaghara. The climate of the district remains hot almost throughout the year. The actual rainfall in the district was 1772.5 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 6 tehsils namely Lakhimpur, Mohammdi, Gola Gokarannath, Nighasan, Dhaurahra and Mitauli Palia Kalan. There are 2 Parliamentary and 8 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 6 sub-districts, 14 towns and 1,794 villages.
According to 2011 the district has a population of 40,21,243 out of which 21,23,187 are males and 18,98,056 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 894 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 25.38% including 23.88% were males and 27.10% were females. The population density in the district is 524 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 98,674 including 50,933 were males and 47,741 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 17,286 out of which 10,166 were males and 7,120 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 76.55% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 94.80%.
Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Some of its chief agricultural products are wheat, rice, maize, barley, sugar-cane, oilseeds and pulses. The cultivation of menthol mint has recently become popular among the farmers of the district. Sugar mills are the significant industries of the district. Its two most important sugar mills are Bajaj Hindusthan Limited (BHL) sugar plant in Gola Gokarannath and Bajaj Hindusthan Limited (BHL) sugar plant in Palia Kalan which are the largest sugar mills in Asia. Some other foremost industries of India are also planning to set up their plants in the various parts of the district. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 31,69,659 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 19,74,386 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 28,24,505 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 17,13,589 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 58,479 at Current Price and Rs. 35,478 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.
It is an abode of many reputed educational institutions. Some of its well known educational institutions are Bhagwan Deen Arya Kanya Inter College, Dharam Sabha Inter College, Government Inter College, Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Saraswati Vidya Mandir Inter College, St. Don Bosco's College, Guru Nanak Degree College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 60.56% out of which 69.57% are males and 50.42% are females.
Zafar Ali Naqvi, an eminent Indian politician and a former Member of Parliament (2009-2014) from Lakhimpur Keri constituency was born on 30th April, 1948 at Lakhimpur Kheri town. He is a member of Indian National Congress. Ajay Mishra Teni, a distinguished Indian politician and the present Member of Parliament of India from Lakhimpur Kheri constituency was born on 25th September, 1960 at Banveer Pur in the Lakhimpur Kheri district. He is a member of Bhartiya Janata Party.
During the year 2021, there were 1,56,763 domestic tourists who visited these places of the district. The district has numerous centres of attraction with historical and religious significance which allures many travellers from different parts of the world. Naseeruddin Memorial Hall, previously known as Willough by Memorial Hall was built by the East India Company in memory of Sir Robert William Douglas Willoughby, Deputy Commissioner of Kheri in the year 1924. Eidgah, a magnificent mosque is situated near the railway tracks between Lakhimpur and Kheri. Shiv Temple, located at Gola Gokarannath in the district is a temple devoted to Lord Shiva. Moreover, the place Gola Gokarannath is popularly known as Choti Kashi. Frog temple, an extra ordinary temple constructed by the former king of Oel State in between the period of 1860 and 1870 is located at a distance of 12 km. from Lakhimpur. Shiv temple located at the place called Devakali is a very famous temple. Pilgrims from far distance place comes to this temple to offer their prayers.
