About Nagaur District (Rajasthan)
Nagaur district is a district of Rajasthan state with its administrative headquarters located at Nagaur city. The name of the district is mentioned in the great epic Mahabharata. Natives of the district believe that the Ahichhatrapur kingdom which was conquered by Arjuna and offered it to his Guru Dronacharya, was an area of the Nagaur district. During different periods of time the district was ruled by different rulers. At the very beginning the place was ruled by Nagas and they were followed by Chauhans, Mughals, Rajputs, sisodias of Chittor, Rathors of Jodhpur, etc. Since, Nagas were the earliest rulers of this place hence the place was named after them as Nagaur. The history of the place explains it as a royal place of many notable kingdoms since the place is full of numerous historical places likewise forts, temples and mosques. The district of Nagaur has two biggest forts namely Ahhichatragarh Fort and Kuchaman fort. Ahhichatragarh Fort is well-known as Nagaur Fort and is situated at the heart of Nagaur city. Significantly, Nagaur also witnessed the bravery of Great Rao Amar Singh Rathor who challenged the mighty Mughal Empire at that time.
Munna Lal Mundel, an eminent corporal (naik) in the 9th Jat Regiment of the Indian Army was born at Mundwa village in the district. The Government of India honoured him by Shaurya Chakra award for his courage and bravery. Hanuman Singh, a distinguished former Indian basketball player was born in 1950 in the Nagaur district. He was played for India in Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympics. In the year 1975 he was honoured by Arjuna Award.
Geographically, the district lies at 27°20'N latitude, 73°74'E longitude and 302 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 0.96% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses an area of 17,718 sq km. and it is bounded by Bikaner district on the North West, Churu district on the North, Sikar district on the North East, Pali district on the South, Ajmer district on the South East, Jaipur district on the East and Jodhpur district on the South West and West. The climate of the district is characterized as dry climate with hot summers. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 632.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 10 tehsils namely Nagaur, Khinvsar, Jayal, Merta, Degana, Didwana, Ladnun, Parbatsar, Makrana and Kuchaman. Moreover, the district comprises 18 towns and 1,589 villages. There are 2 Lok Sabha and 10 Assembly constituencies in the district. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 33,07,743 including 16,96,325 are males and 16,11,418 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 950 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 19.20% out of which 19.04% were males and 19.36% were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu and Muslim with 85.66% and 13.74% of the total population. According 2011 census the principal languages in the district are Hindi with 98.15%. The population density in the district is 187 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 1,03,597 out of which 54,316 were males and 49,276 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 20,742 out of which 12,118 were males and 8,623 were females.
More than half of the population of the district earns their livelihood from the agriculture. So, the economy of the district is solely dependent on agriculture. Some of its chief agricultural products are maize, jowar, paddy, wheat, barley, gram, pulses, etc. The industrial sector of the district is not so well developed but it is developing slowly and gradually. In the district one can found some khadi and village industries. The district has some prominent industries of leather mojari, salt industry, weaving, cement, fertilizer, hand tools, etc. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 37,60,487 lakhs at current price and Rs. 23,48,971 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 34,15,151 lakh at current price and Rs. 20,98,261 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 89,746 at current price and Rs. 55,140 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district provides a platform for higher education. Some of the reputed educational institutions in the district are Global College of Management and Technology, Sandesh College, Yogeshwar Prasad, Lagan Shah Memorial Nursing College, Government Bangur Post Graduate College, Sanskrit Sahitiya Shiksan Kendra, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 62.8% including 77.17% are males and 47.82% are females.
Banwari Lal Joshi, an illustrious Indian political figure who served as the Governor of Uttar Pradesh (2009 to 24th June 2014) was born on 27th March, 1936 at Choti Kathu village in the Nagour district. Earlier, he was also served as the governor of many different states such as Lieutenant-Governor of Delhi (2004 to 2007), Governor of Meghalaya in 2007 and Governor of Uttarakhand (2007 to 2009). Bhanwar Singh Dangawas, a well known Indian politician and a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from Nagaur constituency was born on 7th June, 1929 in the district. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), political party.
The district has a large variety of tourist places which allures many travellers from across the world. Nagaur Fort, built in the early 1100s is the wonderful structure of Rajput-Mughal architecture. Khinvsar Fort situated at a distance of 42 km. from Nagaur is a 500-year-old fort located in the middle of the Thar Desert. Khinvsar town comprises 25 small temples and rare black deer which draw the travellers from different parts of the world. Dadhimati Mata Temple popularly known as Goth-Manglod temple is the identity of Jayal town. The temple was constructed during the Gupta Dynasty (4th Century). Meera Bai temple in the district is also famous. Some other extra-ordinary centres of attraction in the district are Ladnun, Kuchaman fort, Khatu, Kurki, Kharnal, Jhorda, etc.
