Surendranagar district is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Surendranagar city. The district got its name from the Surendranagar city. Since several principalities of the Surendranagar district were ruled by Jhala Rajputs hence it was also popularly known as Jhalawad at that time. The headquarters city Surendranagar including the Wadhwan city is known as the city of Hi-Tech Bungalows and also as Camp.

Sukhlal Sanghvi, a distinguished Jain scholar and philosopher was born on 8th December, 1880 at Limbdi in the Surendranagar district. He was served as a professor at Banaras Hindu University. He was honoured by numerous prestigious awards such as Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan award and many more.

Geographically, the district lies at 22°72'N latitude, 71°64'E longitude and 547 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.56% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 10,423 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 5th in the state and 56th in India. It is bounded by Patan district and Kutch district on the north, Bhavnagar district on the south, Ahmedabad district on the east and south east, Rajkot district on the west and south west. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 510.0 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise the district is divided into 10 talukas including Vadhvan, Muli, Sayala, Limbadi, Chotila, Chuda, Lakhtar, Dasada, Halwad and Dhrangadhra. There are 1 Lok Sabha constituency and 5 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 9 towns and 651 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 17,56,268 out of which 9,09,917 are males and 8,46,351 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 930 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 15.91% including 15.52% were males and 16.34% were females. The population density in the district is 168 (persons per sq. km.). In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 26,372 out of which 13,827 were males and 12,545 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 11,463 out of which 6,861 were males and 4,602 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 92.26% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Gujarati with 98.84%.

The economy of the district is mainly based on textiles, chemicals, ceramics and food processing industries. The textiles and chemicals industries in the district provide several employment opportunities to its locals. Surendranagar district is famous for the Shankar Cotton. Moreover, India’s first Cotton Trading Exchange was established in the district. The district is also rich in mineral resources like silica sand, fire clay, white clay and moulding sand. The contribution of the agriculture in its economy is remarkable. Some of its chief agricultural products are cotton, bajra, jowar, groundnut, papaya, ber, mango, chiku, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the famers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items. The district has some prominent industrial groups which include, PET Plastics, Unifrax, PepsiCo India Holding Ltd., Luxite Industries, Biodeal Laboratories, Mepro Pharmaceuticals, Rimtex Group, Panama Group, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent.

The district is an abode of numerous reputed institutions. It provides platform for higher education. Some of its recognised educational institutions are C. U. Shah Pharmacy College, A R S Sakhida Arts, C. U. Shah Physiotherapy College, M.P. Vora Commerce College, M.P. Shah Commerce College, C.U. Shah Medical College, Ratanmama College of Computer Science, C. U. Shah College of Engineering and Technology, SSP Jain Arts and Commerce College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 72.13% including 82.11% are males and 61.45% are females.

Naushad Solanki, a young Dalit Leader was born in Dhrangadhra of the Surendranagar district. He has served as a member of many organisations locally and internationally. Organisations in which he served are namely National Ground Water Advisory Council-Ministry of Water Resource, DRUCC-Rajkot Division, Spokesperson of Surendranagar District Congress Committee, Vigilance and Monitoring Committee of DRDA, President of Buddha's Light International Association-Saurashtra Central Gujarat Chapter, President of Surendranagar Table Tennis Association and many more organisations. He has also even actively participated in the UN Conference at Brazil.

The district has numerous centres of attraction with religious and historical significance which allures many travellers from different part of the country as well as world. The most admired tourist spots in the district are Fatshar Ganpati Mandir and Dholidhaja Dam. Tagore Baug situated in the Surendranagar city also draws many visitors to this place. It has two clock towers one is in the Ajramar tower and the other one is in the town hall. Some other notable places of interest in the district are Trinetreshwar Mahadev Temple, Raj Rajeshwari Temple, Chotila Hill, Wild Ass Sanctuary, Nalsarovar Bird Sanctuary, Zharia Mahadev, Gangvo Kund, Rotary Garden, etc.
